At the core of every human is a desire to do something meaningful with their life. This foundational desire is often shrouded in doubt, distraction, confusion, fear, discouragement and hopelessness—but our Divine purpose is still present.
The Prophet Moses was a great example of this truth. He was born into a posh existence. As an adopted prince of Egypt, Moses ate well, slept well and was introduced to ever-increasing levels of power and responsibility. But God did not call Moses to be an Egyptian Pharaoh.
Moses was called to lead the Nation of Israel to the “Promised Land,” to fulfill a higher purpose which he was unaware of. In one of the climactic sections of the story, Moses is told by God that he is to deliver a message to the people: “You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine, you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation” (Exodus 19:4-6). What a distinct calling!
Just a few days later, Moses is summoned to the top of Mount Sinai to receive what we now refer to as “The Ten Commandments,” the foundation of most legal systems of the world and a guide to billions of people for centuries.
Moses had a decision to make, and he chose wisely. He chose to follow God in spite of the countless luxuries and opportunities that he had. Moses chose true significance.
Just last week, our team was honored to connect with a team of medical staff from the United Kingdom who are serving in Rwanda long-term. We quickly bonded with this team, and ended up spending more time with them than expected. What struck me the most about this team was their strong passion to serve the people of Rwanda—at great personal discomfort and cost. We met two Pediatricians, Upi and Laura, along with Hannah, an Obstetrician, a Pediatric Nurse named Becci, and Mandy, a Midwife. They each work in local hospitals or clinics, utilizing their skills to benefit Rwandans.
We were grateful to spend additional time with Laura, as she stayed and served at Hope Haven Rwanda, sharing the love of Jesus with everyone she met and demonstrating true compassion. Laura is a clear example of a woman of God who has chosen to serve for a greater purpose, a higher calling in pursuit of true significance. Where will we invest this week? May God help us to contribute to something that is truly significant.
