Directed Steps

(Enjoy this week’s guest post authored by Claire, one of our 2022 Interns, while reflecting on waiting at the Kigali International Airport)

Have you ever made big plans and at the last minute everything changes? Something unexpected comes out of nowhere and messes up all the order and structure you’ve created for yourself, turning everything upside down. You are forced to follow an unexpected path, and it feels frustrating.

As we are here at the airport in Kigali awaiting the arrival of a new intern, we think of many of the small changes that can arise during travel, whether it’s having to switch a flight, or losing a bag, that can throw us off. We come to this airport often, and spend time in the coffee shop, waiting on people and bags, and we are often reminded of how different God’s timeline is from ours.

I have always struggled with the unexpected and stepping into something unplanned. The verse I am thinking about today is from Proverbs 20:24. This verse shows us that we are being guided down every path despite these twists and turns.

“A person’s steps are directed by the Lord”

While we may make plans and schedules for ourselves, they aren’t always what God has intended for us. When we step, we must step forward with faith and trust in the Lord, who directs us, and guides us down His path.

I could have never imagined that I would be doing an internship in Rwanda, but I am thankful that I trusted in the unexpected twist of events that led me to Hope Haven. Though I had a lot of fear going into the unknown, and away from the comfort of my home and my plans, I have grown so much in learning how to trust God, who brought me to this place.

So, despite the difficulties that arise from surprising changes in our lives from travel, or work, or family, it is important to look for God’s blessing in the unexpected. To trust in His timing, however different it may be from ours.
